Janu Vasti – The secret ingredient to healthy knees/joints

It is a process in which oil is retained in the knee joint by making a ring or dough wall with black gram warm and medicated oils. It helps in strengthening the knee pain and joints.

Knee pain is one of the most common health issues we encounter in the modern era. It disturbs our day to day activities and makes us feel crippled. It is often associated with stiffness, swelling, burning sensation, click sounds and limitation of movements.

Ayurveda offers the best time tested remedies for knee pain related to osteoarthritis and other such painful condition. The knee joint is called “Janu Sandhi” in Sanskrit; hence the name “Janu-Vasti” is given to the procedure done on the knee joints. Janu means joint pain and Vasti means to hold. Among all other therapies known for treating/curing chronic knee or joint pain, Janu Vasti is the most popular. In this treatment, the knee joint is bathed with warm medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. It provides magical relief from pain, stiffness associated with knee problems and other long-lasting benefits.

Procedure

The person is thoroughly examined. The Prakriti and vikriti are documented in detail. The disease is also examined. For Janu Vasti, tail and ghee both are equally suitable. They are collected and stored. “Abhyanga” i.e. massage of the body with dosha-specific warm herb-infused oils is performed after the Janu Vasti. Herbal powders like Rasnadi Churna, Kottamchukadi Churna, and Jatamyadi Churna are used. Churna Pind Swedan is administered for a couple of days before starting Janu Vasti as a part of pre-treatment procedures. This aims at causing Rukshan (drying therapy). Janu Vasti or oil pooling is said to provide extra-ordinary relief if done on a dry surface, dryness takes place after conducting Rukshan procedure. After giving a massage to the affected knee joint with herbal oils, hot fomentation is given with powder boluses.

Advantages of Janu Vasti:
  • Pacifies aggravated Vata – Dosha in the knee region
  • Lubricates the knee joint and improves mobility
  • Reduces stiffness and relieves off any associated pain
  • Protects the knee joint from any age-related changes
  • Increases blood circulation in the affected area
  • It helps in reducing osteoarthritis of knee joint, patella-femoral pain and runner’s syndrome

Among all the Ayurveda Therapies available to treat joint pain, Janu Vasti is the most popular and relaxing one. Resorting to medicines is something that is not good for health and should be avoided as much as possible. We cannot avoid medicines for some diseases, but the ones that can be cured otherwise should be treated like that.
